North Korea leader, Kim Jong-un sending a message to US president Donald Trump, saying North Korea will stop testing missiles for now as he wants to meet president Trump as soon as possible. South Korean officials announce president Trump says he will meet with Kim Jong-un by May.
The stunning announcement was just made just outside the White House by top officials from South Korea, who came to Washington with the message from the North. President Trump accepted Kim’s invitations. Its look like a breakthrough, as leaders from both country, going to meet by May.
The announcement of the meeting comes after president Trump signed a big and controversial new tax on steel and aluminum. Trump said, “The American steel and aluminum industry has been ravaged by aggressive foreign trade practices. It’s really been an assault on our country”.
The tariffs, 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, will be imposed on all imported steel except Canada and Mexico which are exempt, but only for now”. At the cabinet meeting earlier, the president said he was flexible.
Trump said, “Sticking with 10% and 25% initially. I’ll have the right to go up or down depending on the country, and I’ll have the right to drop out countries and we just want fairness”. The president calls the tariffs a matter of national security but the sources familiar with the deliberations stated that national security advisor H.R. Mcmaster and Defense secretary, James Mattis both are opposed. So, president’s top economic advisor, Gary Cohn, who decided to resign after the president ignored his advice.
In Congress Republicans overwhelmingly oppose the tariffs. An analysis by the non-partisan trade partnership projects the trump tariffs on steel and aluminum would result in net loss of 146, 000 American jobs in a single year alone.
